LINES ON THE RETURN OF ADMIRAL RODNEY FROM THE WEST-INDIES.
When ancient Rome, the Empress of the World,
In ev'ry clime, her warlike flags unfurl'd,
When her brave patriot warriors homeward brought
The trophies of victorious battles fought,
Or led in chains the Chiefs of hostile hosts,
From Sabine plains, or Carthaginia's coasts
The Roman Muse with rapture strung the lyre,
And sung that praise their actions did inspire.
